Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum | USA | PEAK SEASON
Explore a turn of the 19th century factory building listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. View exhibits of carousel carving and painted animals. Ride a 1916 wooden carousel and listen to the magical sounds of a Wurlitzer band organ. Enjoy the Children’s Gallery and shop in the extensive gift shop.
The Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum is located in the original Allan Herschell Company factory complex at 180 Thompson Street in North Tonawanda, New York.
The building, which is listed on both the New York State and National Registers of Historic Sites, is a series of seven interconnected structures which once housed all of the manufacturing components of the factory. The Allan Herschell Company shipped its first ride from this factory complex in 1916.
Visitors will view the wood carving shop with either a visiting wood carver or a carving video. They will also see the only remaining equipment from the Wurlitzer factory on which paper rolls were punched to play music on a band organ. The self-guiding paper or cell phone tour continues into the paint shop where 25 hand carved carousel animals are on display. Large photomurals throughout the building show the factory in operation in 1919. The original machine shop has been turned into a Children’s Gallery with a Kiddie carrousel, games and seasonal crafts.
The end of the tour is a ride on the 1916 hand carved Allan Herschell carrousel in the Roundhouse, with a 1917 Wurlitzer band organ providing magical music. Visitors are invited to browse in an extensive gift shop. Special events and family entertainment are also presented throughout the season.
