Leonard’s Bakery in Honolulu
Leonard's Bakery has been doing business since 1952. It all started in a small 'hole-in-the-wall' bake shop in Kapahulu, and the sign out front is the very same sign that has greeted customers since they opened. A Kapahulu Avenue landmark, Leonard's Bakery is truly a part of Honolulu history. Customers come for cakes, pies, pastries and sweetbread, but most people come to Leonard's in search of smooth, white balls cooked golden brown in hot oil, then coated with sugar – a Portuguese confection called malasadas. Leonard Rego, Jr. keeps the tradition alive with new creations like the Malasadamobile®, Malasada Babies™, Pao Doce Pups™ and Malasada Puffs™. Today, malasadas are served as an exotic dessert in many fine restaurants.
